Workshops
The only thing I love more than writing is facilitating workshops. I’ve taught for many organizations including Hugo House, Write on the Sound, Hoffman Center for the Arts, Salem Reads!, and the Oregon Naturalist Program.
Choose from one of my listed workshops or request something different - whichever way we go, you know it’ll be fun, interactive, and welcoming to everyone in your writing group!
How to Write Animal Characters
Animal characters bring a depth to your story not achievable with human characters. By exploring four elements—point of view, intelligence, behavior, and The Wilding—and learning from such authors as Shelby Van Pelt, Brooke Bolander, and Garth Stein, you can create believable, well-rounded animal characters that will resonate with your readers long after "the end."
Using lecture, class interaction, and writing exercises (with flashcards!), this lively workshop is fun for writers of all experience levels and genres.
Writing Short Stories
What does it take to write a short story? And what do you do with it when you’re done? We’ll talk about both of those questions, as well as read three short stories and use them for inspiration. There will be writing exercises, so bring your writing implement of choice and join me for a fun workshop!
Beyond Ordinary – A Magical Realism Writing Workshop
Join me in this lively, interactive workshop that’s suitable for all levels of writers. With the help of writing prompts, we’ll explore the world of magical realism and how to use the seemingly ordinary to create something magical. There will be time to write, explore, and share (if you’re comfortable with that!). Bring your writing implement of choice and a playful spirit.
